The saying goes: Build it and they will come. Unfortunately, in the digital world, nothing could be further from the truth. A smart entrepreneur will design a beautiful and informative business website, but they also know that they need to take steps to optimize their site to help increase its chances of ranking higher in the search engine results pages.

Of course, there are a number of factors that can impact a website's search engine optimization (SEO). Some of these things business owners can control while others depend on changes made by the search engines themselves. Still, doing what you can to optimize your site will hopefully enhance your chances for being found in search.

Here are five helpful reminders that can help improve your site's SEO.

1. Update your site regularly.

The good news is, when you create your website using a website builder like Squarespace, many SEO best practices are already mapped out for you. Every time you add a product category to your online store, for instance, your Squarespace website automatically generates SEO-friendly pages with static URLs and links the product category page to other relevant category pages.

But SEO isn't a set-it-and-forget-it process. Search engines prioritize sites that are updated regularly with fresh, relevant information. This can be achieved by updating and creating new product pages or maintaining a blog on your site.

2. Verify Google Search Console.

If you haven't heard of Google Search Console, it's a free service that allows site managers to monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site's status in Google search results. Squarespace, for example, provides site managers with a simple step-by-step guide to verify their sites on Google Search Console.

3. Monitor keywords.

From there, monitor your keywords. Via Squarespace's analytics tool, you can learn which keywords visitors are using to find your website (among many useful features the tool offers).

Once you know which keywords work best for your site, you'll want to use them strategically to help increase your site's search rankings. Include text on your site such as page titles and descriptions that match the search terms people will use to find sites like yours.

4. Organize, organize, organize.

The more organized your site is, the easy it is for customers to understand and navigate. The easier your site is to navigate, the higher it hypothetically ranks in search.

To start, structure your pages with headings to help ease quick navigation. From there, consider arranging products into categories and subcategories to improve navigation even further. When you create sub-categories, Squarespace automatically generates category pages that can be indexed by search engines. Related product category pages are automatically linked together as well.

5. Keep at it.

Optimizing your site for search is an ongoing process. Thankfully, site builders like Squarespace help make SEO easier, but things like monitoring keywords and updating site content takes regular effort.

If you don't see positive results right away, don't give up. Practicing good SEO improves your site's usability for customers which, in turn, should eventually impact your search results as well.
