Mobile Apps have been growing rapidly in every segment now. There are literally millions of apps on the app store. As an entrepreneur, one must create mobile app for a startup to increase customer engagement. But let's not forget few startups which made it big this year, later found it challenging to get their apps discovered and downloaded on mobile platform.

While mobile user stats reveals some positive trends, the reality is that most of the mobile apps had to shut operations due to less user base or any other reason.

Given below is a list of some of these mobile apps which were shut down in 2016.

Dating Apps

Cogxio and DateIITians, two dating apps founded in 2011 and 2014 were shut down this year.

On 15 Jul 2016, the founders decided to shutdown Cogxio & DateIItians based on various factors including unit economics, fundraising, the market competition and more. However, the main highlighted was the lack of investment in consumer marketing in this sector which resulted in difficulty of retaining customers.

Food Delivery Apps :

The food delivery app TinyOwl had started sending notifications to users that the services will be discontinued after May 22.The founder of Mumbai-based startup claimed the move was part of a rebranding exercise as the company was looking to relaunch the app as a full-service delivery app.Another restaurant food pre-ordering app Zeppery shut down its operations after just six months. The founders stated the model was too early for the Indian market and the customer retention costs were too high.

Grocery App :

The Indian startup market is getting populated with grocery companies that are disappearing every other month. Online Grocery Startup Peppertap closed soon this year to further focus on its e-commerce B2B logistics business. After Peppertap, another Hyperlocal grocery delivery app MovinCart closed down its operations, with founders setting up a logistics-tech startup . In January this year Grofers pulled down its grocery app in nine cities.

Video App :

This year Twitter announced it will be closing down the video sharing app Vine acquired in 2012. The company revealed that it would keep the website open but there'll be no way of uploading new videos, since that must be done within the app. Since the announcement of Vine's shutdown, there has been an upturn in activity on the website.
